You know about methane hydrates. They are simultaneously being sought and "mined" by countries desperate to maintain the "life"-style that's killing life by turning it into money with all due speed. And, methane hydrates are also the threat underlying Earth's melting permafrost, a threat thought since the early 2000s to have been instrumental to the Permian-Triassic extinction event and now repeating its earlier performance at exponentially greater speed. Paul Beckwith, physicist, engineer, and professor at the University of Ottawa, published this on Jun 28, 2017. He adds, "Vast amounts of methane exists within ocean floor sediments on the Eastern Siberian Arctic Shelf, in the form of methane hydrates & free methane gas. Up to recently, gas release to the shallow water column (50 meters deep) & atmosphere has been slow, with the subsea permafrost acting as a million corks on a million champagne bottles to contain the methane. Now, rapid thawing of the permafrost has released 10% of the corks, allowing rapid ongoing increases in methane release."
