matomo privacy badge v2 1 1

This privacy policy sets out how Titanic Lifeboat Academy ("TLA") collects, protects and uses your information when you visit this website ("Site"). TLA is a nonprofit. Its website operates in compliance with Creative Commons principles and collects limited information solely to continuously improve the site as detailed below.  All content generated by the website is for purposes of education, not for profit. TLA respects your privacy and strives to meet the General Data Protection Regulations of the European Union.

We are committed to protecting your data. In order to prevent unauthorized access or disclosure we set up suitable physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online. You can be assured that the personal information you provide when using this website will be used by Titanic Lifeboat Academy only in accordance with this Privacy Policy. We will never sell your personal data to anyone.

Consent

Subscribing to our newsletter and/or posting a comment means you agree with both this Privacy Policy and the use of cookies (small data files).  You can accept or refuse cookies via the cookie notification popup selector at the bottom of the page. You can ask us to modify/delete your data at any time. Contact us via our contact form or email us at info(at)titaniclifeboatacademy(dot)org. You can also set your browser to disallow cookies.

What We Collect

Our sole purpose for collecting visitors’ information is to improve our site. We do not collect information for sale or profit. We purposely choose to work with open-source alternative analytic software which “continues to champion the right for people to be in control of their own information.”

When you visit our site, information can flow from you to our site in two ways. You may purposely provide us with your information. Or, our analysis software, Matomo Analytics, collects your metadata anonymously from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), namely a portion of your ISP address code and its country of origin, but nothing to identify you personally. Our site recognizes the visit, the choices to read or watch, length of stay, and return(s), but not "who" is visiting.

Cookies may be transferred from and to your browser so that site software can “remember” your preferences, if any.

Information you provide us is used solely to provide you, in return, with the services you signed up for. Examples:

  • When you contact us via email whether you ask for support, send us questions or comments, or report a problem, we will collect your name, email address and message in order to respond. Once this correspondence is complete, we have no further use for your data.

  • When you post a comment, we collect the User name you provide. If you check the box to be notified of followup comments, we will collect your email address as well.

  • When subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your name and email address. Our Acy Mailing subscription extension then automatically sends you an e-mail containing a confirmation link which you will need to click on in order to confirm your newsletter subscription email address. When you complete this process, the program sends you a confirmation email and informs the webmaster and the editor of a new user. This process helps protect you and your information from hackers.  If you unsubscribe – which you may do at any time – your information is deleted.

Information our Matomo Analytics software collects when you visit can help us improve our site, which is our sole reason for using the software. We purposely have no presence on social media and encourage the use of alternatives, so Matomo Analytics is our source to learn how visitors find our site and how they react to its content. Below is what the program collects and how we use each type of information:

METADATA COLLECTED

Date and time of your visit

This may or may not be useful to us.

Time you spent at our site

Did you find something useful to read? Did our content engage you?

“Bounce” rate

Did you follow an article to a different website and choose not to return to our site?

What We Retain and for How Long

We will retain your account or subscription information as long as either is active, in order to provide you with the services for which you signed up, or as necessary to comply with any legal obligations, resolve disputes, or protect Titanic Lifeboat Academy’s legal rights.

Matomo will continue to collect and store the anonymous metadata detailed in the chart above from all website visitors, including those who have no subscription. Visitors who wish to, may completely opt out from Matomo’s anonymous metadata collection below.

Opt-out of Cookies

The TLA website uses cookies from your internet browser to “manage authentication” i.e. to validate that you are not a robot or unauthorized user. It also uses cookies with some analytics, helping TLA improve the site so that visitors get the best possible educational experience. After 30 days, if you have not visited again, your preferences will be deleted and you will see the popup again on your next visit.

Social Networks and Embedded Videos

Our website contains links to social networks and embedded videos. These services are operated exclusively by third parties. If you follow links to them or play videos on them, information may be transferred from you to those providers. We use JL Like for links to social networks to enable TLA Site users to share their favorite content without compromising their privacy. Some social service providers, like e.g. Facebook, supply official code snippets for their buttons which quietly siphon personal data from all page visitors. JL Like does not create external links to social networks. Share buttons and share counts work without a connection between your browser and these social networks (unless you decide to share, of course).

The purpose and scope of the data processing by those providers, as well as your rights and setting options for the protection of your privacy, can be found in those providers’ privacy policies:
